The project is implemented in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco and Tunisia and promotes the adaptation of Mediterranean agricultural systems to climate change through a combination of modern and traditional water management and conservation techniques and new and indigenous varieties of cereals and legumes resistant to difficult climatic conditions.

  • Following approval by the EC about the shift of activities from Syria to Algeria, the project will be implemented in the area around the village of Khemis Melanah, located in the Wilaya Ain Defla, in collaboration with the Algerian partner Technical Institute of Field Crops (ITGC). Two years of demonstration work will be performed on bread and durum wheat management practices including supplemental irrigation, improved varieties and fertility. The demonstrations will be conducted at the Bassami Aljelali pilot farm (owned by the government) which has the needed facilities. The on-field implementation work will be conducted at 10 farmers’ fields with each farmer implementing a package of best management practices to improve bread and durum wheat production.
  • ACLIMAS contributed to the discussion on the latest achievements in the field of sustainable use of natural resources at the 1st CIGR Conference (International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering) held at CIHEAM – Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari (10 – 14 September 2013). The project made two presentations about the findings of activities carried out in Jordan and Lebanon to respectively enhance wheat agricultural practices and test possible measures to stabilize wheat and barley yields to adapt to climate change effects. Two papers providing insights on the methodology and results of these activities were submitted to the Conference organizers and published in the proceedings. A poster describing the overall project was also displayed.
