The project aims to demonstrate and promote environmentally sustainable water management policies and practices in Egypt and Tunisia, with focus on wastewater treatment activities directed to produce water of appropriate quality levels for its successive re-injection into coastal aquifers.

  • IMPROWARE contributed to the discussion on the latest achievements in the field of sustainable use of natural resources at the 1st CIGR (International Commission of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering) held at CIHEAM – Mediterranean Agronomic Institute of Bari(10 – 14 September 2013) by presenting the preliminary scientific findings gathered during its implementation. Through an article, a poster and a thematic session, IMPROWARE offered insight into the methodology developed by the project’s team of experts to increasingly integrate Treated Waste Water reuse in the planning and development of Water resources in Tunisia. Specifically, the recharge of Korba aquifer (Cap Bon) by Treated Waste Water – monitored since 2008 for the changes occurring in groundwater quality – has been described, in order to investigate the impact of recharging a deteriorated aquifer by Treated Waste Water through infiltration ponds.
  • The IMPROWARE International Symposium on Innovative Means to Protect Water Resources entitled “THE CHALLENGE OF RECLAIMED WASTEWATER REUSE FOR ACQUIFER RECHARGE IN THE MEDITERRANEAN AREA” will take place in Tunis, from July 28 to August 3, 2014.  The Symposium – held in English – will offer a high-level platform to take part in cutting-edge discussions in the field of Water Management, to share information and to network. Numerous important stakeholders, including high level officials of the Ministries of Agriculture, Cooperation, Environment and Water Resources, research and academic Institutions, private sectors, foundations, NGOs and civil society organizations are expected to attend. The Symposium will concern:

  • The project is launching its E-Learning programme offering both on-line and traditional teaching and tutoring activities to interested stakeholders, as a proactive Capacity Building activity.

The three training modules cover the same topics as the Symposium mentioned above:

-          Scientific and Technical Aspects of Water Resources Management

-          Legislative Framework on Water Resources Management

-          Socio-economic Impacts of Wastewater Treatment Using Natural Systems and Related Industrial Application and Development

Registered participants will be able to join in this Capacity Building activity, having on-line access to:

-          traditional training materials

-          informative and tutorial videos on the key technological and methodological results of the Projects

-          documents on best-practice
